There seems to be a lot confusion as to what an aggressive dog is and how they behave. For one, dogs are loyal and protective of their owners and their families, so the natural instinct is to alert the owner if a stranger is coming on the property, just as it is natural for them to alert the stranger that they are present on the property.
Also, understand that animals are much more afraid of you then you should be of them. They don't know the difference between a threatening stranger or one who can be trusted, so this is something that you need to teach him or her over time with the proper training.
However, a dog who exceeds beyond barking at strangers is a whole other matter. This is where your training comes in to remedy the problem.
The first thing that you need to do, especially with older dogs who haven't been trained yet, is to establish your alpha position. By doing so you are letting the dog know that your position is the leader of the pack, and that they must be obedient at all times.
Secondly, you will need to socialize your dog. As a puppy, you need to take them out around other people and dogs in order to get them used to behaving around others, but if you have an older dog, this is even more so imperative.
With a much older dog, teaching him or her to socialize requires that you be patient and consistent with setting boundaries. If you take your dog to the beach where there are other people around and suddenly he or she becomes aggressive, its your job to be firm and say "no" to this behavior.
Eventually, your dog will learn to respect social boundaries, especially if you firmly establish your alpha position both lovingly and firmly while also rewarding him or her for being obedient and friendly.
Another good method to use when socializing your dog is to begin to let him sniff out strangers when he or she is a puppy. This will let your dog know that most people are not a threat.
But if you have an older dog, especially one that has been abused in the past by people, you need to slowly let him or her know that people are not going to be harmful by using the suggestions in this article.
You can also reinforce their trust with others by slowly letting other people gently come near him or her, sniff them out, and over time you will notice they will get more comfortable with their contact with others.
